A SUTTONS ARM TALE

The Sutton Arms in Little Hallingbury is a fine old country pub, said to be over 500 years old.

Now, The Suttons is named after a local family of landowners, The Suttons, many years ago one of the Sutton lads fell in love with a young parlour maid in the pub.

The girl had no wish to return the young mans favours, so in a fit of passion, the young man killed the poor lass, and it is said, his ghost haunts The Suttons, looking for the young lady to beg for her forgiveness.

On still dark nights, several young ladies have been given a gift, a ring, by a handsome young man, who they meet in the hall between the two bars.

When they have got over the surprise of being given the gift, and have gone to look for the young man, who gave them the gift, he is nowhere to be found, and as soon as they go to show another person the gift, the gift disappears.

There is a major problem with this tale, infact, even I, a staunch believer is wild and silly story's find it hard to come to terms with.

The timeline of pub to Suttons doesn't tie up quite right, I thought Thomas Sutton, died without issue, as the strange term would have it.

The mysterious 'some say', the truth is far, far worse than the story.

Thomas Sutton killed, or had cause to be killed, a girl on the site of the pub, why, who knows, and this fancy about the 'ring' comes from a feeling of remorse from Thomas or the killer, or both.
